My Workshop and Tools

Here are a few pictures of my workshop. The workshop is fairly small but attached next to it is a large barn where I will be building the fuselage etc. I am going to need to build some form of polythene tent inside as the barn itself is drafty and damp. But the workshop is large enough to build the empennage etc.

My main pieces of machinery are an Axminster wood and metal cutting bandsaw, an Axminster sanding machine, a Warco lathe, and my pride and joy: a Myford mill/drill. Out of site is a small bench mounted drill. Please don't get the idea that you need all this to build av RV! I also enjoy model engineering and my goal is to build a 1/5th scale Sopwith Pup complete with working Le Rhone Radial engine!

Fortunately I don't have to buy any new aircraft tools as we kept the tools after completing the RV7. We bought a set of tools from Avery, which we are very pleased with. I am tempted with a hydraulic rivet squeezer this time and a few more rivet dies. We rather made do with the Avery standard set, but a few extras would have made life easier - I have no idea why we didn't buy some more at the time.

As we progress through the build, I will be adding all the tools we use to give you an idea what sort of range of tools are required to build an RV. Some will be essential and others will be 'nice to have'. I will try to diferentiate between the two; but one man's pickled onion is anothers caviar - where on earth did that come from!
